eps / The Conundrum of Jesus' Genealogy

This week, we take a break from our discussion of apostles to focus on the birth of our Lord Jesus. In Matthew’s genealogy, we find the names that we would expect to link Jesus to the Abrahamic and Davidic promises, but we also find names that we would not expect and one that causes a “mental train-wreck.” Following in the footsteps of the Master, Matthew crafts a conundrum that would lead his largely Jewish audience to the long awaited glorious fulfillment of the promises for a Savior and King.

This week we come to some conclusions about the way Paul uses the term “apostle” in his writings. An apostle/emissary in the general sense is someone who is called and empowered by Christ, recognized and sent by the church to represent Christ in spreading the Gospel and founding new assemblies by sacrificing their lives for the welfare of others as Christ himself did.
